Job Description

Your new career
Our Civil Operations team provide civil maintenance services throughout the Surf Coast region and are currently looking for a Civil Maintenance Officer to join their team located at the Winchelsea depot.

This position plays a crucial role in supporting our people and community to thrive by providing important maintenance services across the shire. You will contribute to the team by helping other team members and ensuring that agreed productivity and service levels are met. Specific tasks of this role include:

  • Performing civil maintenance and construction work on Council’s civil assets such as roads, footpaths, drainage & signage, as part of a diverse team. 
  • Safe and appropriate operation of plant, where required, such as Front End Loader, Backhoe, Roller, Sweeper & Trucks to 45T.  


What you will bring to the role
We are seeking a safety-focused and reliable Truck/Plant Operator with experience operating and maintaining heavy vehicles and plant equipment in civil construction, maintenance, or infrastructure environments. Experience working within a local government setting will be highly regarded.

To thrive in this role you will: 

  • demonstrate experience operating truck and trailer combinations, including tipping and material spreading operations, and operating heavy plant machinery safely and effectively. 
  • have a sound understanding of daily plant inspections, maintenance requirements, logbooks and equipment care. 
  • be committed to workplace safety, including following Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), conducting risk assessments and adhering to safe work practices. 
  • possess the ability to read basic construction plans and follow work instructions accurately. 
  • be capable of supporting civil construction and maintenance activities, including material handling, measurement, compaction and operating a range of plant and equipment. 


Key selection criteria
Mandatory qualifications, experience and requirements

  • Holder of a current Heavy Combination (HC) or higher driver’s licence with relevant endorsements to operate plant as assigned.
  • Several years’ experience in civil works. 
  • Skills and knowledge gained through on-the-job training relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrated experience in the maintenance of municipal assets.
  • Experience in a Local Government environment. 
  • A current Working With Children Check
  • You have the permanent right to live and work in Australia
  • Police Check results that are suitable for this position (will be arranged by Surf Coast Shire Council). 
    A complete international criminal history check is required if the person has worked or lived overseas for any period of time OR a complete national criminal history check is required if the person has only ever worked in Australia.
